Request Euthanasia

Owner Requested Euthanasia

One of the hardest parts of pet ownership is the inevitable fact that they will grow old and reach the end of their time with us. The Humane Society of St. Joseph County offers owner requested euthanasia for pets in need of end of life services, when staffing allows. You may be directed to contact your primary veterinarian or emergency care center in the event we are unable to quickly respond to your euthanasia request.

If you feel that your pet is ill, please schedule an exam with your veterinarian for a proper diagnosis. If your veterinarian feels that euthanasia is the best option for your pet, you can request to have that service performed at the Humane Society of St. Joseph County. We will request that you provide a letter from your veterinarian confirming a grave diagnosis. This letter is not required, but please be aware that pets presented for euthanasia without this document may be refused if they do not appear to be in immediate need.

If you have a pet that has exhibited aggression that impacts their quality of life or endangers the community, you may request euthanasia from the Humane Society of St. Joseph County. You will be required to provide recommendation from your veterinarian or official state documentation of an unprovoked attack.

All owners presenting pets for euthanasia will need to bring their photo I.D and a copy of the pets most recent veterinarian records, even if they are expired.

If you are bringing a family member or friends pet for a scheduled euthanasia appointment you will need to bring a written letter from the owner of the animal giving you permission to sign for them for this procedure, as well as a copy of their I.D. Please be sure to have your photo I.D as well.

Important things to remember:

Your pet will be given respect and will be cared for by a euthanasia certified technician.

In order to serve you better an appointment is required for euthanasia services. If you do not schedule an appointment there may not be a staff member available to assist you.

Cremation services are offered through Palmer Pet Cremation at an additional fee.

Owners who choose to have the pets euthanized at the Humane Society of St. Joseph County may not accompany their pet for the procedure. If you wish to be present with your pet, you will need to schedule an appointment with your veterinarian.

We reserve the right to refuse euthanasia of any animal.
